Hot Air Balloon Safari in Kenya

We’re all familiar with jeep safaris, but hot air balloon safaris are less well known. Yet this is a booming industry in Kenya, in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Martin Unsworth experienced it firsthand—not as a tourist, but as a pilot of the balloons that fly over herds of wildebeest and zebras in the midst of their migration. He was fortunate enough to work there for three consecutive years. We say “fortunate” because you need a great deal of experience to be accepted as a pilot in this commercial sector. Why? Because these are baskets that hold about 16 to 24 passengers! Yes, you read that right! You could call them flying buses.

Imagine soaring over the African savanna as if you were in The Lion King, observing wildlife in its raw, natural state! It’s like living a documentary in real time—immersing yourself in the animal world in a subtly abstract way, gently floating like a bird through this exclusive landscape. A unique experience that changes our perception and view of the world, both through the Masai tribespeople and the animals we encounter and interact with during this incredible adventure that is a hot-air balloon safari.

Martin has so much to share on this topic that he offers public lectures to recount all his adventures and share his photos—which are sure to inspire you!
